Shopping Tips

This will save trees and the energy used in paper production.

Bring Cloth Bags to the Market
Use your own cloth bag instead of plastic or paper bags, or reuse your existing grocery bags.
This reduces waste and requires no additional energy.

Buy Used Items
Use a service like craigslist.org or FreeSharing.org to find used furniture and other items.
Also check out garage sales and thrift stores for clothing and other everyday items.

Buy products in bulk to save on packaging and transfer the products to your own reusable containers. Avoid products that are packaged for single use ( i.e., drinks, school lunches, candy, cat and dog food, salad mixings, etc.).

Avoid purchasing plastic #3, PVC/vinyl.

While shopping, if you only buy a few products, skip the shopping bag. For larger purchases, bring your own.

Carry a mug with you wherever you go for take out beverages.

  • Give a friend a membership to a non-profit organization.

    Avoid creating trash wherever possible:
  • when ordering food, avoid receiving any unnecessary plastic utensils, straws, etc.
  • buy ice cream in a cone instead of a cup
  • don't accept "free" promotional products
  • buy products with the least amount of packaging, etc.
Every little bit of trash avoided does make a difference!
